How The Gastric Band Works

The Adjustable Gastric Band is made of silicone and is placed around the top of the stomach, creating a small pouch of around 20-30ml. The band i.e. the piece of the prosthesis that fits around the stomach is adjustable. This means it can be tightened or loosened around the stomach to ensure the correct size of pouch. The band has a chamber in the ring that is filled with a saline solution and it is this that achieves the adjustability of the Gastric Band.

Unlike some other surgical weight-loss procedures, the Gastric Band is easy to place and is very quickly effective. The whole procedure takes around 40 minutes and is performed in many hospitals, both NHS and Private, across the UK. The procedure is seen as reliable as a safe method of reducing weight in patients who in the UK have a BMI of over 30 and one or two co-morbidities. The procedure is carried out laparoscopically or via keyhole surgery.
